Frequently Asked Questions

This page is a work in progress. I've tried to answer some basic questions I thought people might have.

If you have a question, please read this page before emailing me. I'm more than happy to answer questions. But please keep in mind that I maintain this site as a hobby, and I'm not always able to answer messages promptly.

1. How did you choose fics to archive?

Some are fics I remember reading. Some are by authors I remember being popular. Some are from the favorites lists of those authors. Some were in the top 40 when I sorted the archive by favorites. Some were written as part of a contemporary fandom trend or fad. And some are just fics I liked and wanted to preserve.

2. How did you make these files?

I created most of these files by using the FanFicFare plugin for Calibre.

Other files were created by me. So if you notice differences in formatting, that's why.

3. I wrote [fic]. Can you take it down?

I'm more than happy to remove a fic you wrote that you no longer want online. Send me an email - maxridearchive at gmail. Please include your username and the name of the fic you want removed.

If you ask me to remove a fic you wrote, its entry on the main list will still exist, but I will remove links and take down the page with the fic's text. This is because I want to keep some indication that the fic existed.

Similarly, if some of your fic is here and you'd like me to change the username that appears with it, email me and let me know what you want it changed to.

4. Why didn't you include [fic]?

My search methods probably didn't turn it up. Also I've focused more on fic between 2005 and approximately 2012, with some outliers. So, fics written after 2012 are less likely to appear for that reason.

If you want to recommend a fic for archival, email me! The fic must be currently online (or you can send me a saved copy).

If you would like to be credited, include a nickname in the text of your email. Otherwise I'll just credit you as "Anonymous".

Any message you send will remain private unless you specifically ask me to post the text publicly.

5. Why did you include [fic]? It sucks!

I made the choice to include as much fic as possible, regardless of subjective quality.

My first goal with this archive is to provide as accurate a reflection as possible of what the landscape of Maximum Ride fanfiction looked like. Excluding fic based on perceived quality goes against that.

I don't personally enjoy every fic on this archive. I haven't read all of them. But I think they're worth preserving.

6. I'm having a technical issue with the site. Can you fix it?

I've tried to make this site user-friendly and accessible, and I briefly check pages to make sure they are functional before uploading them. But sometimes I miss things.

Please email me if you're having trouble viewing a page. (Or if you just spot a typo on one of the non-fic pages.)

7. What are your plans for this site?

There are a lot of things I'd like to do in the future. Here are some things I plan to do in the future...

I want to archive more fic from fanfiction.net: I need to download non-English fics, and I need to take a second pass at the M-rated fic section to ensure I didn't leave out fics.

I also want to at least index some fic from other sites. I chose to focus on fanfiction.net because it's not automatically cached by the Wayback Machine. There's also old Maximum Ride fic in the archives of the official forums, but in some cases archiving those fics would be a genuinely mammoth task -- there's a lot of archived material from Max-Dan-Wiz. And of course there's Livejournal. (Preliminary warning if you didn't use Livejournal: LJ allowed you to gate who could see your content. Even if I do get access to friends-locked fics there, I will not be publicly listing them. Fanfiction.net and other sites were public; an f-locked LJ post was not, and I want to respect that.)
