Total's Thoughts

My earliest memory is of running, running on an electrical charged floor and scientists writing down notes about what the readings were saying. This was done day after day.

I was just an animal and couldn't voice my pains and thoughts. I was locked up in a cage, experimented on like if I wasn't a living creature. They thought of me as something that they could do whatever they wanted. To them, I didn't have feelings. I was just a toy or puppet.

They messed with me even in my food. After a while, I was afraid to eat because who knows what they could have put in it.

There came a day when they picked me, out of all the others of my brothers and sisters, to use as a new test subject to a brain experiment.

They shaved off all my black fur and stuck wires all over my head. I remember bright lights and then lots of pain. When I came around, I was lying in my cage, all alone, in a different room.

Weeks went by and I sat in front of my cage, watching, and waiting. Someone would bring me a bowl of food but I rarely touched it. My fur was starting to grow back. At night I tried to bark or howl for my litter but no sound came out. I was starting to think that, maybe, the scientists made me mute.

Two months later, the scientist got tired to see no change in me so they moved me again when I was sleeping. They dumped me in a room where, when I woke up, I found other rejected and failed experiments. We were going to be terminated.

I didn't care anymore. Maybe death was better. Maybe death could save me from this hell, this hell of pain and torture.

I watched the other experiments. Some were close to dieing and others seemed alright. It didn't matter though. If the scientist thought of you as failure then all that was left was for you to die.

I knew that I was different. I could make sounds similar to the scientists. I never tried it when they were around. Who knows what they would have done to me if they had found out. My sleep had changed too. Whenever I fell asleep I dreamed. They were all nightmares though but one time I got a chance to dream of freedom.

I had escaped somehow and I was running, running away from the labs and the scientists. I was running through a field overgrown with grass. I had never seen so much green. I was so happy. But it couldn't last. I found myself moving and I forced myself into consciousness. Maybe the scientists were going to kill me now.

But instead, when I woke up, I found myself looking into the eyes of a little girl with blue eyes. She smiled at me and petted my head. She spoke softly to me. "Hush little Total. Everything's alright. You look like Toto from the Wonderful Wizard of Oz."

She held me gently in her long skinny arms and right then I knew that everything was going to be alright.

"Thank you."

She smiled, not finding it surprising at all that a dog had spoken. "You and I are going to be best friends."

She hugged me close to herself and then I licked her face.
